waimea

On the north end of the island, perfectly located above the coastal resort areas, you will find the cool pasturelands of the paniolo town Waimea, also known as Kamuela. To explain why the town has two names, it was when the United States Post Office established a zip code for the area that it was designated as Kamuela, or Samuel, for a member of the Parker family, from the famed Parker Ranch. Parker Ranch is the largest landowner in the area and was at one time the largest privately owned cattle ranch in the country.

Waimea is a sought after place by those who love a cooler climate but appreciate the quick access to other parts of the island. The community core is strong with an eclectic mix of neighbors from farmers and ranchers to astronomers and small business owners, from artists and thespians to healthcare and education professionals. Not a transient community but a community to call home. Real estate choices include new homes that are constructed with low maintenance in mind, older kama’aina properties with views of Mauna Kea, agricultural lands, a few apartments here and there with an occasional small business for sale.
